If you have had a cold, you may still have some inflammation in your ear canal and we recommend to wait a few days before entering the chamber to ensure there is no discomfort.
You may feel a slight popping as the pressure in the chamber increase (similar to being on a plane). There should however not be painful. If you are feeling discomfort simply let us know and we can reduce the pressure or exit you from the chamber.
What To Expect: Your First Time In Oxygen Therapy
A Step-by-Step Guide to Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Session
Before Your Session
- Consultation: A member of staff will explain in detail how the session will run.
- Comfort: You will be in the AirPod for an hour, so its best to visit the bathroom prior. Clothing should be comfortable and you can have a blanket in the chamber should you need it.
- Preparation: It's best to keep meals light prior, so you can be comfortable during your session. Feel free to bring any devices into the chamber (phone, laptop, music etc), or you can use it for ultimate rest time, many people sleep!
During Your Session
- Entering the AirPod: You'll enter a hyperbaric chamber/airpod. To enter simply bend the knee closest to the chamber, bend down to the knee and roll on to your back. The staff member will close and secure the glass door, as you make yourself comfortable.
- Pressurisation: The pressure inside the chamber will gradually increase, you may feel a slight popping of the ears (similar to being on a plane), which can be relieved by yawning or swallowing. We will remain with you as the pressure reaches optimum levels.
- Relaxation: MHBOT sessions are for 1 hour. You can relax, read, listen to music, or even sleep during this time. Staff will periodically check in on your during your session.
After Your Session
- Decompression: At the end of your session the pressure inside the chamber will gradually decrease, allowing you to exit safely. You may experience some ear popping during decompression, which is totally normal.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water after your session to help your body flush out any excess oxygen.
- Listen to Your Body: Some people feel energized after MHBOT, while others may experience temporary fatigue. Allow your body time to adjust.
- Healing Process: The full benefits of Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may not be immediately noticeable. It's often used for chronic conditions, and improvement may occur gradually over multiple sessions.

The team at Lokahi (specifically Holly, Julia & Kerrie) were so great words can't even explain. I went in so sick due to an anaesthesia reaction & they made me feel so comfortable & looked after. The nurses are so knowledgable & empathetic too. They have a beautiful relaxation/waiting area which they don't rush you out of post treatment so you can sit, have a tea and wait until you feel ready to go.
