Red light therapy is our newest treatment at LōKAHI – but what is it and how does it work?
Initially NASA began experimenting with red light therapy (RLT) on plant growth in space and then to help heal wounds in astronauts. Like many developments, other potential uses began to be investigated.
Red light therapy is thought to work by enhancing your body’s energy cells, called mitochondria. With more energy, other cells can do their work more efficiently, doing things like repairing skin, boosting new cell growth and enhancing skin rejuvenation. More specifically, certain cells absorb light wavelengths and are stimulated to work better. Because of this process red light therapy stimulates collagen production, which gives skin its structure, strength and elasticity. Also increasing fibroblast production, which in turn makes collagen: a component of connective tissue that builds skin. Increase blood circulation to the tissue and Reduces inflammation in cells.
Red light therapy may be used to improve wound healing, speed up sports recovery, reduce stretch marks, wrinkles, fine lines and age spots. It may also improve facial texture and acne, psoriasis, rosacea and eczema. It also can help reduce visibility of scars and sun-damaged skin. RLT has also been found to improve hair growth in people with androgenic alopecia.
Red light therapy is safe and is not associated with any side effects, at least if used short-term and as directed. This therapy is not toxic, not invasive and not as harsh as some topical skin treatments. Unlike the cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or tanning booths, RLT doesn’t use this type of light.
What are the types of light frequencies?
There are 5 different light frequencies (nanometers) that are in our RLT cabin. 633 nm, 660 nm, 810 nm, 850 nm, and 940 nm.
Each frequency has its own benefits:
633 nm encourages circulation and collagen
660nm increases blood flow and gives pain relief
810nm penetrates the skull and into the brain (this means it offers significant neurological benefits).
850nm this is one of the most deeply penetrating wavelengths, reaching vital organs and providing systemic benefits. It’s used for its anti-inflammatory effects, promoting better circulation, and aiding in tissue regeneration and wound healing
940nm reduce muscle fatigue by increasing ATP production and reducing oxidative stress. This can be useful in the treatment of muscle-related disorders and in sports performance the 940nm wavelength can also improve lymphatic drainage by promoting lymphatic vessel dilation and increasing lymphatic flow. This can be useful in the treatment of lymphedema and other lymphatic-related disorders. It can improve eye health by promoting retinal cell survival and reducing oxidative stress. This can be useful in the treatment of eye-related disorders such as age-related macular degeneration.
